8th Maine Artists - Island Artists' Association

Our Eighth Maine Artists started coming to Peaks Island to paint and study painting under Sister Vincent DePaul over 30 years ago.

They started the tradition of staying at the Eighth Maine Regiment Memorial in 1982, the first year that Marilyn Adams became the Hostess and operating manager.

Most of the time the artists work in water colors, but sometimes they work in oils, pastels, pen & ink, and acrylics.

After a full day of painting they return for a communal dinner which is followed by the evening critique. Sometimes there is even time for a light hearted party to celebrate special events for the group.

The Annual Art Show & Sale has been an integral element of funding for us to renovate the lodging rooms and bedding. Thanks to the generous donations by the artists after their sales we were able to update all the rental bedding.

Everyone greatly appreciates the improvements that their efforts have made possible. No one misses the good old days when the beds with middle ruts rolled their occupants into the center through the course of a night.

The artists arrive in the third week of July for a week of painting and evening critiquing that culminates Friday afternoon and evening with the Annual Art Show and Sale on the Eighth Maine porch.

The show and sale features new work from the last week, commissioned works that have been completed that are present for delivery, and previously completed work that they have matted and/or framed for sale. Prices range from under $1 to several hundred dollars for large framed works.

Come see the artwork, meet the artists and take home some treasures.
