Come enjoy  a memorable, history filled stay at the Eighth Maine Regiment Memorial on scenic Peaks Island.

Lilacs in early bloom on Peaks Island.

Welcome to the online home of the Eighth Maine Regiment Memorial Association, Inc., the non-profit corporation, that owns and operates the Eighth Maine Regiment Memorial Building: a unique Civil War era structure located on scenic Peaks Island. It is open seasonally from May until October each year.

History filled tours of the building are available daily and 12 bedrooms can be rented for overnight stays in our facility that Yankee Magazine named as one of the 12 Best Places to Stay on the Seashore.

Twelve bedrooms are available for overnight guests to experience seashore living in Eighth Maine, early 19th century, communal style. The Memorial is a fully functional hostel with bedrooms, common rooms, food preparation, food storage and dining facilities for guests.

The main hall, office and dining room can also be rented for special events, family reunions and business meetings.

Everyone is welcome to come and unwind from all the stress of modern life, step into a living history lesson and be inspired by the natural beauty of our location overlooking the rugged Atlantic shoreline.

For your enjoyment of the natural beauty of Peaks Island, local businesses provide rental bikes for touring the island, fishing equipment, fine dining and casual food restaurants, kayaks for rent and touring, instruction in kayaking skills and marine eco-systems, artist galleries, museums, tennis, horseback riding and other sporting facilities.

And of course there are all the shops, galleries, museums, theaters and world class restaurants a short ferry ride away in the Old Port.

Casco Bay Lines which runs the ferry service has boat tours of the harbor and the Calendar Islands. The Portland Schooner Company provides similar tours on classic sailing boats and there are whale watch cruises and classic shore dinners available.

Day trips for history buffs include the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum in Brunswick, the State Archives in Augusta, the Shaker Village at Sabbathday Lake and the Poland Spring Museum, Chapel and Spring House.

And shoppers can indulge themselves at LLBean's flagship store and the many outlet shops in nearby Freeport or at the Kittery, Maine outlet center.

History Filled Tours Daily: 11:00 to 4:00

Learn about the 8th Maine Regiment, the Memorial Hall, the Civil War, Peaks Island, and the island's role in two world wars in an official tour with our host and guide: Dr. Richard S. Adams, aka the Professor.

Overnight Accommodations

Enjoy the salt air, our natural ocean air conditioning, the rhythmic clapping of the rocks as waves retreat down the shore, the musical symphony of horns when fog rolls in, and the scenic beauty of the rugged ocean shoreline just outside your bedroom window.

Hosting Special Events

For four years, the regiment marched, fought, and died side-by-side. After the war, the survivors vowed to maintain the bonds and the friendships they had formed. This Memorial was where those bonds were renewed each year. The communal lifestyle they adopted is integral to the Eighth Maine experience and is perfect for hosting group events like your family vacation, wedding,  reunion, seminar, class or business meeting.
